June 15, 2013: We have a hen that started to sit on some eggs. Getting a hen to hatch eggs is not as simple as it sounds. One big problem is that hens like to lay in the same place as the other hens. A hen who is laying will get up to grab a quick bite to eat and some water and while she is gone other hens will lay eggs on her nest and she will soon have more eggs than she can keep at the right temperature to hatch (99.5 degrees Fahrenheit). As it happened we had taken our nest boxes apart to clean them and left some temporary nests including a cardboard box with some hay. This hen got "broody" and sat on the eggs in the box, so we picked up the whole box and moved it to a little pen where she won't be bothered.
